1. Ants are social insects living in large colonies. Ant societies are complex and characterized by division of labour & extensive communication between individuals.

2. Ants are capable of carrying objects several times their own body weight.

3. The total biomass of all the ants on Earth is roughly equal to the total biomass of all the people on Earth.

4. Ants will enslave other ants, keeping them captive and making them do work for the colony.

5. Ants lived alongside the dinosaurs. They evolved some 130 million years ago, about the same time when the dinosaurs walked this planet.

6. Some ants form "supercolonies," massive communities of ants. During migration, such colonies have been seen stretching for miles.

7. Ants follow scent trails laid by other ants to gather food.

8. Certain ant species defend plants in exchange of food and shelter.

9. There are three kinds of ants in a colony: The queen, the female workers, and males. The queen is the only ant that can lay eggs.

10. Ants thrive in most ecosystems, and form about 15–25% of the terrestrial animal biomass.

11. Ants are found on all continents except Antarctica.

12. Some species of ants are valued in their role as biological pest control agents.
